About the Nominee: Sherri Irish was nominated by her principal, Alycia Shagena.Most of the students at Fort Gratiot Middle School are from middle-class families. As in other areas in Michigan, the student demographic has shifted over the last 5 years. Mrs. Irish recognized that many students were coming from homes without food on the table. She wrote a proposal to begin a food pantry so that the students and families of Fort Gratiot who are in need would have food on the weekends.Her proposal was approved, and she filled the pantry in a matter of weeks with donations from staff, students and a local church. In the month since the pantry has been open, Fort Gratiot has donated over 100 pounds of food to students in need!
